I found the best wine cabinet at ReStore in Cornelius. A solid piece of furniture, all it needed was a facelift. Of course, I cannot find the before picture. I am adding photo organization to my “to do” list.
Anyway, the old finish was a stain that had a lot of red undertones to it. It just wasn’t my style. I sanded the top down to bare wood. I stained it with an ebony stain and “woke” the wood up with a little tung oil. Once the oil dried, I did three coats of Annie Sloan clear wax. This step was to protect the top while maintaining a matte finish.
Finally, I did three coats of dark wax to the top. It made the wood so rich in color.
For contrast, I painted the cabinet portion of the piece with white milk paint (I wanted an authentically “chippy” vibe and love milk paint for that.) I distressed it and decided it needed a little more oomph…a little pop. And what’s better than gold?
I painted the inside of the piece with Krylon’s 18kt gold spray paint. I LOVE this stuff.
I then decided to give a hint to the gold on the inside by using golden gilding wax along the side of the top piece. I love the way it turned out! It is the first “official” piece that has been put on the Southern Nest website to make it available to everyone. To all you locals, it’s heading to the Sleepy Poet this week! If you want to check it out online, you can find it here!
